The Ultimate 2026 Guide: Importing Used BMW 3 Series From China

May 16, 2026

BMW has been established in China for 21 years, and the BMW 3 Series has evolved through several generations, including the E46, E90, F3x, and G2x. However, the engines in the E46 and E90 models are notorious for issues like heavy oil burning and severe coolant leaks. Given their age and these recurring problems, we simply do not recommend them.

Starting from the F3x generation, the reliability of both the engines and transmissions improved dramatically. Currently, we have over 200 F3x and G2x models available in our inventory, making it an excellent time for overseas buyers to import a used BMW from China.

F3x Series Buying Logic: Long-Wheelbase (F35) vs. Short-Wheelbase (F30)

Let's start with the F3x series. China has a market-specific long-wheelbase version, the F35, though the standard short-wheelbase F30 is also available. Because Chinese consumers overwhelmingly prefer extra legroom, the F35 dominates the market inventory.

Regarding handling: our editor used to drive a short-wheelbase F30 BMW 320. Honestly, in 95% of daily driving scenarios, the handling of the long-wheelbase F35 is identical to the F30—you won't feel any difference. However, the F35 offers significantly more cabin space, making the rear-seat passenger experience vastly superior. Therefore, we highly recommend going straight for the long-wheelbase F35!

F-Chassis Powertrain Guide: What to Buy and What to Avoid

  • Absolute Red Flag - 1.6T (N13B16): Literal industrial garbage. It combines the worst of three worlds: the N20's oil leaks, the B48's coolant leaks, and severe oil burning. Avoid at all costs.
  • Skip It - 1.5T (B38B15): While this 3-cylinder engine doesn't have fatal mechanical flaws, a 3-cylinder simply doesn't belong in a premium B-segment sedan.
  • Approach with Caution - Early N20 (Pre-August 2014): Known for a distinct knocking sound (it doesn't necessarily cause breakdowns, but it sounds like a tractor) and uses a vacuum-actuated PWG turbocharger.
  • Recommended - Late N20 (Post-August 2014, e.g., 2015 models): Extremely stable. Upgraded pistons eliminated the knocking sound, and it features an electronic EWG turbo. While it still suffers from BMW's inherited oil seepage (valve cover, oil filter housing, oil pan), the technology is highly mature and repair costs are very affordable.
  • Highly Recommended - B48 (2017 models and newer): The absolute best 2.0T BMW has made to date. Oil leaks are massively reduced, and it doesn't suffer from the oil-burning issues of the later B48 TU. It is practically perfect.

⚠️ Tuning Warning: Absolutely do not attempt to flash an ECU tune to force a low-output engine to perform like a high-output one.

F-Chassis Summary: If you are on a tight budget, buy the 2015 model. If your budget allows, go for the 2017 or 2018 models. The 2018 models even come standard with the M Sport package and BMW's classic M Sport steering wheel (affectionately known by Chinese enthusiasts as the "thong" steering wheel)!

G-Chassis Era Buying Logic (2020 to Present)

For used G-chassis models, our core recommendation is the 2020 BMW 325Li M Sport Package (the very first batch of the G-chassis).

Four Reasons Why the 2020 Model is the Ultimate Choice

  1. Avoid the "Feature-Stripped" Minefield: Starting in 2021, due to global chip shortages, BMW heavily stripped features from their cars (downgraded audio systems, missing physical keys, removal of kick-to-open trunk, no electric lumbar support, etc.). Buying a 2020 model perfectly dodges this issue.
  2. The Engine "Hidden Bonus": Although the 2020 model is labeled as "low-output," the actual hardware is a genuine high-output engine (2019 builds use the imported B48B20; 2020 builds use the domestically produced B48B20D). Only the software limits the horsepower, giving it massive upgrade potential. Models from 2021 onwards use standard low-output hardware (intake manifold integrated with the cylinder head, missing the low-temperature auxiliary radiator).
  3. Physical Gear Shifter: The 2020 model retains the classic mechanical gear shifter, which looks and feels much better than the tiny "nub" toggle shifter found in later models.
  4. Unbeatable Value: The age of the car is just right, offering the absolute best pricing and value in the current used market.

Other G-Chassis Considerations

  • B48 TU Oil Burning: This is a real problem that must be acknowledged. Although the low-output versions after 2023 have somewhat mitigated this issue, the used car prices for 2023 models are currently too high, completely defeating the purpose of buying a cost-effective used car.

Recommendations on Used BMW 3 Series Options

When it comes to features, highly optioned models equipped with the Harman Kardon sound system and Head-Up Display (HUD) are incredibly worth the money. They massively upgrade the driving experience!
