The BMW 5 Series is not a car you should choose by price alone. Its real value is the long-wheelbase rear seat, comfort, road composure, brand presence and the calmness of a large premium sedan on highways and long trips. If you are buying a BMW 5 Series from China for yourself, the first task is not to find the lowest price; it is to judge model year, generation, mileage, trim and condition together.

On SellGoodCar.com, there are currently 243 BMW 5 Series vehicles for sale, with an average price of $29,746. Among them, 28 cars are under 3 years old, 215 cars are over 3 years old, and 37 cars sit in the very-low-price group. This means the Chinese market offers plenty of choice, but a good personal-use 5 Series must first be filtered by condition risk, then by powertrain and equipment.
Quick Take: How to Choose for Personal Use
If your budget is comfortable, start with the 2025 or 2026 530Li. The new-generation 5 Series has a larger body, more modern driver-assistance features and better comfort equipment, while the 530Li powertrain fits the character of the 5 Series better. But a newer year does not automatically mean lower risk: the 2025 530Li Leading M Sport Package averages $47,070, yet 2 of the 4 cars are marked high-risk, so the inspection report still matters.
If you want a better balance of price and comfort, the 2022 Second Facelift 525Li M Sport Package deserves attention. It has 11 cars listed, an average price of $33,929 and average mileage of about 59,600 km. It is much cheaper than recent 530Li cars, yet still gives you the rear-seat space, premium feel and daily comfort expected from a 5 Series. It is not the strongest engine choice, but for commuting, family use and business trips, it is enough for many buyers.

If you care about power and highway acceleration, the 530Li is the better fit than the 525Li. The 2025 530Li makes 190 kW and 400 N·m, with 0-100 km/h in 6.5 seconds; the 2023 530Li makes 180 kW and 350 N·m, with 0-100 km/h in 7 seconds. The difference is not only on paper: when the car is loaded, overtaking or cruising at higher speed, the 530Li feels more relaxed.
If your budget is tight, 2018 528Li, 2017 520Li/525Li and 2014 525Li/535Li cars look attractive, but they are older, higher-mileage cars and the low-price group contains many high-risk entries. These cars are only suitable if you accept a higher repair probability and are willing to inspect carefully. For most people who want a worry-light personal car, do not buy only because the asking price is low.
The 5 Series Generation Change Matters
From the 2024 model year onward, the Chinese long-wheelbase BMW 5 Series entered a new generation. Body size, cabin technology and driver-assistance equipment changed meaningfully. Comparing the 2025 530Li Leading M Sport Package with the 2023 530Li Leading M Sport Package, the newer car is 5175 mm long versus 5106 mm for the older car; maximum torque rises from 350 N·m to 400 N·m; and the newer car adds adaptive cruise, blind spot assist, lane keeping assist and automatic parking.
That does not mean the new-generation car is automatically right for everyone. The new 5 Series is more modern in design and technology, and the body is larger. The previous generation is more mature, cheaper and, for some buyers, closer to the traditional 5 Series feel. The real question is whether you value the newer design and equipment more, or the lower price, mature platform and familiar driving character.
Cars Under 3 Years Old: Prioritize the 530Li, But Read the Condition Carefully
The under-3-year group is not large, and prices range from $39,433 to $51,567. The age and mileage look attractive, but the condition spread is still meaningful. The 2026 530Li Leading M Sport Package appears only once, at $51,567, with 6,000 km, factory paint and a residual value of 72.2%. It looks clean, but one car cannot define the whole price level.
The 2025 530Li Leading M Sport Package has 4 cars, an average price of $47,070, a price range of $43,650 - $51,567 and a residual value of 65.9%. It is one of the more interesting recent 5 Series versions: strong enough power, better equipment than the 2023 version and a newer luxury-sedan experience. The problem is that the condition mix includes 2 high-risk cars, so each report must be checked one by one.
The 2025 525Li M Sport Package averages $44,332, slightly below the 530Li. It fits buyers who care more about comfort, design and budget. The 525Li is fine for daily driving, but if you often drive on highways, carry passengers or want easier acceleration, the 530Li suits the 5 Series better.

Cars Over 3 Years Old: More Choice, But Condition and Trim Matter More
There are 215 BMW 5 Series cars over 3 years old. This is where value is easiest to find, and also where mistakes are easiest to make. The 5 Series is used in very different ways: some cars spend their lives on highways and business trips, some do city commuting, and some have already had multiple paint or bodywork repairs. If you only compare year and average price, you can miss the factors that really affect ownership.
The 2022 Second Facelift 525Li M Sport Package is one of the more balanced choices: 11 cars listed, an average price of $33,929 and average mileage of 59,600 km. It is much cheaper than a 2025 car, but not yet old. It suits someone who wants a relatively recent 5 Series without pushing the budget above $45,000.
The 2020 525Li M Sport Package averages $25,266, with 11 cars available. It is cheaper, but average mileage reaches 81,300 km. This version can work for a more budget-sensitive buyer, but rear quarter panels, doors, hood, radiator support and seat rails must be checked closely. The tables repeatedly mention rear quarter panel paint/bodywork repair, seat-rail disassembly marks and radiator support disassembly marks; these should not be brushed off as minor cosmetic notes.
If you are looking at the 530Li, 2020, 2021 and 2022 cars all offer choices. The 530Li has stronger performance and feels more complete as a 5 Series, but the tables show that the high-risk share is not low. With these cars, it is better to spend slightly more on a car with a clearer inspection report and lower structural risk than to save a few thousand dollars on a repair history you cannot fully explain.

Very-Low-Price Cars: Attractive Budget, But Do Not Chase Price Alone
The lowest 15% of BMW 5 Series listings mainly fall between the 2014 and 2018 model years, with average prices roughly from $11,800 to around $20,000. That is tempting for a large premium sedan, but most of these cars are older, higher-mileage vehicles, many already above 100,000 km. Before buying, keep your expectations realistic.
The 2014 535Li Leading appears only once in the table, at $15,318, and its condition is marked as factory paint. It looks special. But the 535Li is a stronger and more mechanically loaded version, and the car is now old enough that you cannot ignore chassis wear, transmission condition, engine leaks, the cooling system and aging electronics just because it has factory paint.
The 2018 528Li Launch Special Edition is more worth watching within the low-price area. In the configuration table it has 6 cars, an average price of $19,671, maximum power of 165 kW and 0-100 km/h in 7.4 seconds. It is stronger than the 525Li and newer than many 2014-2017 cars. Still, its price-and-condition table shows a meaningful high-risk share, so it must still be judged car by car.
For most buyers, a low-price 5 Series can be bought, but it should not be treated as “cheap and trouble-free.” The better way to understand it is this: you pay less for luxury-car space and brand value, while accepting stricter inspection needs, reconditioning budget and higher maintenance preparation.

What to Check Before Buying a BMW 5 Series from China
First, check structural areas and major exterior panels. The tables frequently mention rear quarter panel paint/bodywork repair, inner C-pillar deformation, inner B-pillar deformation, upper side-rail paint repair and radiator support disassembly marks. On a large premium sedan such as the 5 Series, repainting alone is not necessarily frightening; unclear structural-area history is.
Second, check for water damage and interior disassembly clues. Seat-rail and seat-frame disassembly marks, spare-wheel well water marks, damp carpet, oxidized wiring and unusual odors should be checked together with inspection photos and videos. Luxury cars have many electronic modules, and hidden flood risk can become much more expensive than on an ordinary car.
Third, inspect the chassis and wear items. The 5 Series is a heavy car. As age and mileage rise, suspension bushings, dampers, engine mounts, brakes, tires and steering components may need investment. For cars before 2020, the low asking price is only the first step; a reconditioning budget should be planned before purchase.
Fourth, make sure the trim and equipment match your use. Newer 530Li cars have more driver-assistance equipment, older Premium trims may have better audio and comfort features, and lower-spec 525Li cars may be powerful enough but less luxurious. Do not buy only the name “BMW 5 Series”; check the exact year, version and configuration.
Why Use SellGoodCar.com First
The value of SellGoodCar.com is not only that it lists cars. It puts price, mileage, model year, trim, condition mix, common defects and configuration differences together. For someone buying a BMW 5 Series from China, this is far more useful than looking at a single asking price.
You can first use SellGoodCar.com to narrow your budget around the 525Li, 528Li, 530Li or 535Li, then compare the average prices and condition mix in the tables to decide which versions are worth deeper inspection. Once the target is smaller, review inspection reports, photos, videos and export-related details car by car. This is steadier than blindly chasing the lowest price and makes it easier to find a BMW 5 Series that truly fits daily use.
Final Recommendation
If you want less hassle, prioritize clean-condition 2025/2026 530Li cars. If you want value, focus on the 2022 Second Facelift 525Li M Sport Package. If you want power and equipment, choose a 530Li rather than looking only at the 525Li’s lower price. If the budget is tight, consider a 2018 528Li or 2017 525Li, but accept stricter inspection and more reconditioning preparation.
The BMW 5 Series is absolutely worth considering from the Chinese market, but it should not be chosen by “newer year” and “lower price” alone. The right personal-use 5 Series is the one with a clear trim, transparent condition, reasonable mileage, suitable equipment and ownership costs that you can comfortably accept.
